Maia Sandu Meets Irish Minister to Discuss EU Path

Moldovan President Maia Sandu held talks with Ireland’s Minister for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and Moldova’s path toward European Union membership. Sandu highlighted the importance of opening an Irish embassy in Chisinau and deepening ties between the two countries.
The role of the Moldovan diaspora in Ireland was also emphasized.
Sandu reaffirmed her commitment to advancing EU accession, noting that reforms are delivering tangible benefits. The two sides reviewed progress and priorities for 2026, including Ireland’s upcoming EU Council presidency.
She also welcomed the expansion of technical negotiations and the EU’s €189 million funding tranche for Moldova.
