Moldova faces energy crisis: State of emergency declared amid rising outage risks
Moldova is facing a severe energy crisis following Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Authorities have declared a 60-day state of emergency, warning of increasing risks of power outages.
Officials say strikes on energy facilities in southern Ukraine have disrupted key transmission lines supplying electricity to Moldova, placing additional strain on the country’s already fragile energy system.
Moldelectrica confirmed that the critical Isaccea–Vulcănești transmission line, which connects Moldova to the European energy grid, has gone offline. This development is seen as a threat not only to national energy security but also to regional stability.
Authorities warn that the system is operating at its limits, and any imbalance could trigger cascading failures across the grid.
President Maia Sandu strongly condemned the attacks, calling them a war crime and stressing that their impact extends beyond Ukraine.
She noted that Moldova’s connection to the European grid was temporarily disrupted during the attacks. Although alternative routes have been activated, the system remains unstable.
Experts highlight that Moldova’s heavy dependence on imported energy makes it particularly vulnerable to such external shocks.
The National Crisis Management Center confirmed that the outage of the main transmission line poses a significant regional risk.
Moldova’s economic fragility further compounds the crisis, as the country remains one of the poorest in Europe.
